Welcome to the MFPE!

The Multi-Fandom Postcard Exchange was established on August 13, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recognized that many people were experiencing feelings of isolation and thought a postcard exchange would be useful because 1.) it allowed for low-stress interaction and 2.) it gave us something physical to hold onto/squee over/smile about.

Our collective feelings of isolation were never just due to the pandemic, of course, so the MFPE has persisted and is still active today.

We aim to be no-stress: you find people with similar interests and write to as many or as few of those people as you'd like, as many times as you'd like, whenever you'd like. And to ensure that money is not an issue, you can join without sending a single postcard. There is no pressure to perform.

We especially want to reach out to lurkers. We recognize that lurkers often make up an enormous part of fandom and lurk for a variety of reasons. We welcome all lurkers to join and lurk about our member directory. Should something inspire you to un-lurk for a moment, you can do that and then go back to hiding in the void. We don't mind at all!

What is the MFPE?

The Multi-Fandom Postcard Exchange allows you to anonymously send and receive postcards to other fans around the world who have interests similar to yours. To protect your privacy and reduce the possibility of doxxing and harassment, all mail is sent first to us and then forwarded on to the recipient. Your real name and mailing address are never shared with anyone else, period.

Everyone who is at least 16 years of age is welcome to join, especially lurkers! Because we understand that everyone has a different financial situation, you are allowed to join but not send any postcards. The system is a not a 1:1 postcard exchange; all members are able to browse the Member Directory and send as many or as few postcards as they wish. Who is sending and receiving is tracked by us, and we will do our best to make sure no one is overlooked.

The admins of the MFPE are located in the United States. If you want to send postcards, you must pay the postage to get them to us. We pay the postage to get them to the final recipient.

We welcome your feedback on how to improve; please don't be shy!

How does it work?

After you have signed up for membership and filled out your interest profile, you will be added to the Member Directory under your randomly assigned Fan Number. Other fans will then be able to send postcards to you, and you will be able to send as many postcards as you'd like to other members!

Lifecycle of a Postcard

Sender sends postcard(s) in an envelope to adminadmin fills in the recipient's address, affixes postage, and mails postcard to recipientrecipient registers with admin that the postcard was received!

If permission is given (by default, it is, but you can opt out each time you send something to us), the postcard will be scanned by the admin so that it can be posted here after the recipient has acknowledged receiving it.

Question #1
You want international fans to participate, but the postcards have to be written primarily in English?
Yes, unfortunately. This is because the admins can only read in English, and if they cannot read your postcard, they cannot prevent harassment. Greetings in your native language as well as well-known canonical quotes from non-English fandoms are fine.
Question #2
Why can't I include my return address on the postcards I send?
To put it simply: because it is within the realm of possibility that a participant may end up regretting their decision at a later time. In the future, we may allow for "penpal lists" of people who are not worried about giving out their personal information—something that one would definitely have to opt into separately. But that's a discussion for a later time when we are more established.
