Receiving Postcards

When you receive a postcard, be sure to register it with us.

How to Send a Postcard

  1. Find someone to send a postcard to in the member directory.

  2. Create a postcard (or multiple postcards for the same or multiple members) according to the postcard guidelines below.

  3. Print off and then fill out a postcard cover sheet, or write one out completely by hand (but be sure to include all requested information). The PDF contains three cover sheets per page.

  4. IMPORTANT: If you do not want us to upload a copy of your postcard, be sure to put a checkmark in the box provided.

  5. Put your postcard(s) and postcard cover sheet in an envelope and send it to the Multi-Fandom Postcard Exchange mailing address provided to you when you registered. Contact us if you need the address sent to you again.

Sending Cards vs. Postcards

Although this exchange is primarily meant for postcards, members are also allowed to send folded cards (like greeting cards).

You may use any (non-religious and non-political) commercial card as long as it meets the recipient's rating requirements, or you may create your own.

Content requirements are the same as for postcards.

There are no rules about where content should be placed on a card. However, you must write "Card ID:" somewhere and leave a space for us.

If your card is larger than 5"x7" (127 mm x 178 mm) when folded together, there may be a delay in sending it on to the recipient due to the size of the envelopes we keep on hand.

Physical Requirements for Postcards

  1. You can use any (non-religious and non-political) commercial postcard you have laying around as long as it meets the recipient's rating requirements, or you can create your own--and even design it to match your recipient's interests!

  2. Your postcard must be rectangular and at least 3 1/2" x 5" (89 mm x 127 mm).  It should be at least as thick as an index card and no more than 0.4 mm thick.

  3. The back/written side of the postcard must be divided into a right portion and a left portion, with the left portion being the space for your message.

  4. On the left side, with your message, write “Postcard ID:” and leave a space for us.  Postcard ID numbers are currently one letter followed by two numbers.

  5. Leave the entire right side of the postcard blank.  We will fill in the address for you.

  6. Do not put postage on the postcard.  As it is an anonymous system, you will not know whether you need domestic or international postage.

  7. You may decorate your postcard with washi tape as well as flat stickers if you wish. Please do not use puffy or 3D stickers.

  8. The standard postcard size (and the cheapest to send domestically in the U.S.) is 6" x 4.25" (152 mm x 107 mm).  If it is larger than this, we will have to pay letter postage (which we'll have to do for international postcards anyway).

Content Requirements

  1. All postcards must be primarily written in English. (See FAQ.)

  2. If you include a greeting, make it a general one, even if you happen to know the identity of the recipient. For instance, "Dear fellow fan," etc.

  3. The theme of your postcard content (on the back/written side) must reflect the interests of the recipient. Do not include:
    • content for fandoms not listed by the recipient.
    • romantic content for pairings not listed by the recipient.
    • any of the recipient's triggers, squicks, or Do Not Wants.

  4. You must follow the rating requirements listed by the recipient. If your content goes above the recipient's rating threshold, your postcard will not be delivered. (When in doubt, send us an ask!)

  5. Acceptable things to send:
    • a ficlet/drabble (these can be posted to The Multi-Fandom Postcard Exchange AO3 collection)
    • a fan fiction recommendation
    • an excerpt from one of your own fics (posted or unposted)
    • 'what i love about this fandom/character/relationship’
    • a fanmix track listing
    • a recipe inspired by a character/relationships/etc.
    • your own hand-drawn bit of fan art, a comic, etc.
    • probably anything else you can think of! Send us ideas!
    • You can also send little extras (conforming to the recipient's interests) such as stickers, bookmarks, mini-prints, small buttons, etc. Please be sure to indicate on your cover sheet which recipient should receive each item.

  6. You may send the same overall content to different people. If you do not opt out of us scanning your postcard, only one version will be posted.

  7. You are not required to sign your postcard, but you are more than welcome to!

  8. Do not write your return address on the postcard.
